ITOCHU Invests in Ammonia Storage Terminal at India’s Port Pipavav

ITOCHU Corporation has invested in the ammonia storage terminal business operated by Aegis Terminal (Pipavav) Ltd. (ATPL) at Port Pipavav in Gujarat, India, strengthening its position in the country’s expanding ammonia logistics market.
ITOCHU acquired a portion of ATPL’s equity securities from Aegis Vopak Terminals Ltd. (AVTL), joining the business as an investor in the terminal, which is India’s first independent ammonia storage terminal. The facility was completed and became operationally ready on August 10, 2026.
The project includes a newly constructed ammonia storage tank with capacity of approximately 36,000 metric tons, equivalent to around 52,000 cubic metres. The terminal also includes cargo-handling facilities, pipelines and truck loading and unloading infrastructure, creating an integrated logistics hub for ammonia at Port Pipavav.
Located in western India, Port Pipavav provides strategic access to the country’s industrial and agricultural markets. ITOCHU expects the terminal to play an important role as domestic ammonia demand increases over the medium to long term.
Ammonia has traditionally been used primarily in fertilizer production and industrial applications, but its role in the energy transition is expanding. It is increasingly being considered as a low-carbon fuel and as a carrier for transporting and storing hydrogen, creating potential new sources of demand alongside established fertilizer markets.
ITOCHU plans to leverage its existing relationships with major customers in India, including fertilizer and chemical manufacturers, while exploring opportunities connected with fuel and clean-energy applications.
The investment also builds on ITOCHU’s existing relationship with companies within the Aegis Group. The Japanese trading company has previously developed storage terminal businesses with Aegis Group companies in India, particularly in the LPG sector.
By extending this cooperation into ammonia, ITOCHU aims to strengthen logistics infrastructure and establish a stable supply chain for a market that is expected to expand as India’s agricultural, industrial and energy requirements grow.
The business will operate through a joint model combining ITOCHU’s global ammonia trading network with the domestic and international terminal operating capabilities of the Aegis and Vopak groups. This structure is intended to connect international ammonia supply with India’s growing domestic demand while creating flexibility for future clean-energy applications.
The new terminal could become increasingly important as ammonia moves beyond its conventional role in fertilizers. Its ability to receive, store and distribute significant volumes of ammonia provides infrastructure that can support emerging uses while reducing potential supply-chain constraints.
For ITOCHU, the investment is consistent with its broader strategy of expanding downstream businesses in response to changing market needs. Under its management policy, “The Brand-new Deal: Profit opportunities are shifting downstream,” the company aims to expand business areas while contributing to the development of a more sustainable society.
The Pipavav investment gives ITOCHU a stronger foothold in India’s ammonia infrastructure at a time when the country’s demand for energy, fertilizers and industrial materials is increasing. It also provides a platform from which the company can participate in the development of future ammonia-based fuel and hydrogen-carrier markets.
With its combination of large-scale storage capacity, integrated handling infrastructure and connections to international trading networks, the ATPL terminal is positioned to support the development of a more robust ammonia supply chain in India and potentially facilitate the country’s transition toward wider low-carbon energy applications.
