AM Green wins €585m H2Global deal to ship green ammonia to Germany

India’s AM Green Ammonia has emerged as the sole winner of the Asian lot in the latest H2Global tender, securing a ten-year contract to supply renewable ammonia to Germany. The tender was run by Hintco, the trading arm of the German government-backed H2Global mechanism, and AM Green’s bid was ranked first among those submitted.

Under the agreement, Hintco will buy ammonia certified as a renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO) worth at least €585m over the contract term. Hintco also has the option to buy further volumes from AM Green, paid for with the money it raises when it resells green ammonia on the European market.

The ammonia will come from the second phase of AM Green’s Kakinada project in Andhra Pradesh. There, an existing ammonia and urea complex that runs on natural gas is being converted to produce ammonia from hydrogen made by alkaline electrolysis. The first shipments to Germany are planned for 2029 and will leave from Kakinada Seaports, which sits right next to the plant.

AM Green said the contract strengthens its position as an exporter of green molecules to Germany and the wider European market. H2Global said the strength of the bids shows that renewable ammonia projects have matured considerably since the scheme’s pilot tender. AM Green was set up by the founders of the Greenko Group and is developing low-carbon ammonia capacity at several sites across India.
