Next Hydrogen secures Canadian government funding for electrolyser R&D

Canadian electrolyser maker Next Hydrogen Solutions has secured up to $2m in funding from Natural Resources Canada to improve the efficiency, performance and cost of its commercial electrolyser modules.
The research will push the company’s alkaline cell technology towards demanding performance targets. Its first milestone is 1.8V per cell at a current density of 1.0A/cm², in line with the US Department of Energy’s 2026 target for alkaline water electrolysis. Next Hydrogen expects to reach this by the first quarter of 2027.
The programme will then continue towards a final target of 1.7V per cell at 1.2A/cm² by September 2028. The company says its cell design, protected by more than 40 patents, responds quickly to changes in power supply, which lets it convert intermittent renewable electricity into green hydrogen efficiently.
