Toyota launches bZ4X Concept SUV
The automaker debuts all-electric SUV concept includes new AWD system.
Toyota launches the Toyota bZ4X Concept, which includes battery-electric vehicles to be introduced under the ‘Toyota bZ’ brand umbrella to achieve carbon neutrality through the advanced, alternative-fuel and zero-emission powertrain technologies. The bZ4X Concept portfolio covers alternative powertrains such as battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell electrics, hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
Currently, Toyota offers 55 electrified models globally, which is now planned to expand to 70 by 2025 featuring 15 dedicated BEVs, including seven carrying the bZ (the name bZ stands for ‘beyond zero’) brand moniker. Toyota plans to produce the Toyota bZ4X in Japan and China and aims to start worldwide sales of the model by mid-2022.
In Europe, by 2025, the powertrain mix will be of more than 70% hybrids, over 10% plug-in hybrids and more than 10% zero-emission models – both battery-electric and fuel cell electric. Furthermore, this lineup, in total, will account for more than 40% of all alternative powertrain vehicles sold in the US.
Toyota also plans to add electrification to its pickup truck lineup in the near future, including hybrid and BEV powertrains.
Besides pursuing fuel cell vehicles, Toyota fuel cell technology applies to several other end-use sectors such as heavy trucks, trains, shipping, stationary and mobile electricity generators. This diverse portfolio of electrified products will help achieved Toyota carbon neutrality by 2050.
