TELMES Wins Contract for Hydrogen Infrastructure Project in Italy

TELMES has been awarded a €1.4 million contract as part of a hydrogen production, storage and refuelling project for Ferrovie della Calabria, marking its entry into the growing hydrogen infrastructure sector.

The project will be developed at the Cosenza Vaglio Lise railway depot in southern Italy and involves the construction of facilities to support hydrogen-powered trains and buses. TELMES will be responsible for electrical systems, including lighting, grounding systems, and the supply and installation of medium- and low-voltage switchboards. The contract will contribute to the company’s order backlog and is expected to be recognised in its 2026 financial results.

At the core of the project is a hydrogen production system based on PEM electrolysis with a total capacity of 5 MW. The installation will be supported by auxiliary systems for power management and control, forming part of a broader sustainable energy infrastructure designed to reduce environmental impact and improve the efficiency of regional rail transport.

The facility will include two hydrogen refuelling stations for trains to ensure service continuity during maintenance, as well as a dedicated refuelling point for hydrogen-powered buses. The project also expects upgrades and expansion of railway infrastructure to accommodate new hydrogen trains and increase the depot’s operational capacity.

This initiative forms part of wider efforts to decarbonise public transport and accelerate the energy transition. The project led by Ferrovie della Calabria represents one of the first regional-scale applications of hydrogen technology in the rail sector in Italy, contributing to lower CO₂ emissions and the development of sustainable mobility solutions.

TELMES CEO Massimo De Stefano said the contract highlights the company’s ability to deliver complex, technology-driven projects and represents a strategic step into the hydrogen infrastructure market. He added that the project supports the company’s broader growth strategy focused on energy transition and sustainable transport sectors.
