Toyota Hydrogen Solutions Achieves Key Certifications for Commercial Fuel Cell Units

Toyota Hydrogen Solutions has announced that its fuel cell systems have achieved ANSI/CSA FC 1 and ANSI/CSA FC 6 certifications, marking an important step towards broader commercial deployment of stationary hydrogen-powered generators across North America.

The certifications, issued under standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and CSA Group, confirm that the systems meet key safety and compliance requirements. This milestone is expected to reduce barriers to adoption for businesses considering hydrogen-based power solutions.

Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through an electrochemical process that combines hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water vapour as a by-product. As a result, they offer a lower-emission alternative to traditional internal combustion generators, while also operating with reduced noise levels.

Toyota has been developing fuel cell technology for several decades and is now expanding its applications beyond vehicles into stationary power, commercial transport, and industrial uses. The newly certified systems are designed to support a range of applications, including backup power for critical infrastructure such as hospitals, as well as grid support through peak shaving and remote power supply in off-grid locations.

According to the company, stationary fuel cell generators can often operate with fewer regulatory restrictions than conventional generators due to their zero-emission output at the point of use. They can also run continuously as long as a hydrogen supply is available, making them suitable for both resilience and continuous power applications.

Toyota Hydrogen Solutions is also working with Rehlko to develop 1 MW fuel cell-powered generator systems. The collaboration, first announced at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo, focuses on delivering integrated energy solutions for organisations seeking to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining reliable power supply.

The company said the certifications reinforce confidence in its technology and support its broader strategy to scale hydrogen solutions in commercial and industrial markets. Toyota Hydrogen Solutions is expected to showcase its stationary power systems at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo 2026 in Las Vegas in May.
