ErreDue Secures Uganda Contract to Supply Green Hydrogen Plant for Steel Industry

Italian hydrogen technology firm ErreDue S.p.A. has signed a €900,000 contract to supply a green hydrogen production system to a major international steelmaker, strengthening its presence in overseas markets.
The project involves the installation of a 0.5 MW alkaline electrolysis plant at an industrial facility in Uganda, where the hydrogen will be used to support steel manufacturing processes.
The system will consist of two modular 250 kW electrolysers, capable of producing up to 55 tonnes of high-purity hydrogen annually. Delivery is scheduled for September 2026.
The hydrogen generated on-site will be used primarily in thermal treatments of steel, particularly in oxidation-reduction (redox) processes, where it acts as a reducing agent to remove surface oxides and enhance the quality and performance of finished products.
ErreDue said the installation will replace traditional gas cylinder supply, offering improvements in safety, logistics and operating costs, while also supporting more sustainable industrial practices.
Francesca Barontini described the agreement as a significant step forward for hydrogen adoption in heavy industry.
“This project marks an important evolution in the application of hydrogen in industrial processes,” she said, adding that demand for scalable and reliable solutions is growing rapidly, particularly in emerging markets.
The deal highlights the increasing role of hydrogen as a strategic energy carrier in hard-to-abate sectors such as steelmaking, where it can contribute to both decarbonisation and process optimisation.
ErreDue noted that the contract reflects broader momentum behind the use of advanced technologies in metallurgy, as companies seek to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact across global operations.
