POSCO Chief Calls for Global Steel Cooperation on Decarbonisation

Chang In-Hwa, Chief Executive of POSCO Holdings, has urged stronger international collaboration to accelerate decarbonisation across the steel industry during a high-level gathering in Germany.

Speaking at the regular meeting of the World Steel Association, held in Berlin over two days from 13 April, Mr Chang highlighted the need for collective action as the sector faces mounting pressure to cut emissions while navigating economic and geopolitical challenges.

The event brought together senior executives from major global producers, including China Baowu Steel Group, Nippon Steel and India’s JSW Steel, to discuss long-term issues such as energy security, supply chain resilience and the standardisation of carbon accounting.

Addressing the executive committee, Mr Chang described decarbonisation as a “collective imperative” for the industry, despite headwinds such as slowing demand and rising energy costs. He also outlined POSCO’s own roadmap for reducing emissions and transitioning towards low-carbon steel production.

“Close cooperation and solidarity across the global steel industry are essential for a successful decarbonisation transition and for ensuring that low-carbon steel products are recognised for their fair value in the market,” he said.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr Chang held bilateral talks with key industry figures, including Sajjan Jindal of JSW Group and Liu Jian of HBIS Group. Discussions focused on overseas investment opportunities, emissions reduction technologies and strengthening supply chains.

The visit also saw POSCO recognised for its sustainability performance. At a subsequent member meeting, the company was awarded the ‘Sustainability Champion’ designation by worldsteel for the fifth consecutive year—underscoring its standing as a global leader in environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices.

The recognition reinforces POSCO’s position at the forefront of the steel sector’s transition towards greener production, as pressure mounts worldwide to align heavy industry with climate goals.
