Uzbekistan increases focus on hydrogen

Uzbekistan plans to mitigate the impact of climate change, develop renewable and hydrogen energy and accelerate the transition to a green economy.

The President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, also participated at the International Summit “Partnership for Green Growth and Global Goals – 2030” (P4G) in South Korea where the world leaders discussed key issues including coping with the consequences of climate change, “green” recovery and ensuring carbon neutrality. The president also announced to host an international conference, “Green Energy for Developing Countries”, in 2021.

Uzbekistan is pursuing a national policy to transition to a green economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and adapt to climate change.

Under the Paris Agreement, Uzbekistan is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10% of GDP by 2030. The country aims to increase the share of renewable energy sources in electricity generation to 25%, aiming to install five solar and three wind power stations.

Uzbekistan was the first in the region to join the Global Green Growth Institute and intended to open its office in the country. It is also ready to join and become a full member of the P4G partnership.

Meanwhile, Mr Sardor Umurzakov, Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, met with Klaus Mangold, Co-Chairman of the EU-Uzbekistan Business Council. Particular attention was paid to deepening cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy. It is understood that the introduction of new hydrogen-based technologies in Uzbekistan will increase the production of electricity, gas, chemical and fertilisers.
