SUNFIRE to supply 100MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer at RWE’s hydrogen site in Lingen
Sunfire, a leading global electrolysis company, has been awarded a major contract for a 100-megawatt (MW) pressurized alkaline electrolyzer at RWE’s hydrogen site in Lingen. The expanded collaboration underscores Sunfire’s position as a key partner for the implementation of large-scale projects, making a significant contribution to the decarbonization of the industry. The order comes a few days after RWE’s final investment decision (FID) for the energy company’s largest hydrogen project to date.
For the order, Sunfire will supply RWE with a total of 10 modules of its reliable pressurized alkaline technology, each with a 10 MW capacity. The electrolyzer will thus contribute one-third of the total production capacity of RWE’s 300 MW plant. In addition, Sunfire will be responsible for the installation and commissioning of the 100 MW electrolyzer, which is scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2027. The plant will then produce up to two tons of green hydrogen per hour, primarily for industrial customers in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.
Nils Aldag said, “With the realization of major projects such as the 100 MW order from RWE, Sunfire is underlining its leading position once again. Sunfire is one of the few companies in the world that can deliver electrolyzers at an industrial scale. With an order book totalling over 800 MW, we are a preferred partner for large-scale projects.”
Dr. Sopna Sury said, “After Sunfire has already provided an electrolyzer for our pilot plant in Lingen, we are looking forward to continuing this collaboration as part of the GET H2 nucleus project. With Sunfire’s electrolyzer, the GET H2 nucleus will reach its full production capacity in 2027. At the same time, we are expanding our technology portfolio with an alkaline electrolyzer in the three-digit megawatt range.”
The 100 MW electrolyzer from Sunfire is a key component of the GET H2 Nukleus project at RWE’s hydrogen site in Lingen. The German electrolyzer specialist has been awarded the contract as part of the third construction phase, which will increase production capacity to 300 MW. Just a few weeks ago, the energy company and the electrolyzer specialist celebrated the commissioning of a 10 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer in Lingen. In addition, Sunfire’s high-temperature SOEC electrolyzer has been producing hydrogen at the RWE Emsland gas-fired power plant site since 2023.
Sunfire’s pressurized alkaline electrolyzers are used by a wide range of customers. Together with international energy giants such as RWE and Uniper, and leading project developers such as P2X Solutions and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Sunfire is setting the standard for green hydrogen production for industrial applications.
