Sembcorp designs ammonia powered tanker; Albatross Marine Hydrogen helps marine sector
The transition towards green energy opens up new business possibilities and opportunities.
LMG Marin AS (a subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine Ltd) has secured a contract to design the world’s first green ammonia-fuelled tanker, the MS Green Ammonia, for Grieg Edge (a unit of the Grieg Maritime Group).
The vessel will transport and distribute green ammonia fuel from a production facility in Berlevåg, Norway, to Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole, from 2024, replacing coal-fired power.
Mr Torbjorn Bringedal, MD of LMG Marin, said, “Together with Grieg Edge, we are excited in pursuing new green technologies and making it a future reality.”
Mr Wong Weng Sun, CEO of Sembcorp Marine added, “The world’s energy transition is underway, and the marine industry has been proactive in driving the industry forward towards a greener future.”
In a separate development, Albatross Designs Group has announced the launch of Albatross Marine Hydrogen, an entity dedicated to helping the maritime shipping industry through the use of green hydrogen. The work of the new entity includes developing its shipping platform, port infrastructure, supply networks and management infrastructure.
Albatross Marine Hydrogen is working in all areas, including green hydrogen production, in-port hydrogen fueling, fuel cell implementation, maritime labour and engineer training, and bolstering a viable consumer market that will actively choose net-zero supply chain products, to name just a few of their current activities. It is currently in talks with technology companies, ports, shipping lines, and the businesses that are actively seeking to improve the environmental performance of their supply chains.
