Enel Green Power and Saras plan 20MW electrolyser in Italy

Enel Green Power and Saras Group have signed a memorandum of intent (MoI) to develop a green hydrogen project in Saras refinery at the Sarroch industrial site, Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. The plan includes installing a 20 MW electrolyser fed by renewable energy to produce green hydrogen for the refinery.

Enel Green Power is an Italian multinational renewable energy company. Saras Group is Italian energy multinational with operations in petroleum refining, marketing, transportation and power generation.

Salvatore Bernabei, CEO of Enel Green Power, said: “The signing of this memorandum of intent, confirms the Enel Group’s commitment to promoting the development of green hydrogen in Italy and worldwide, accelerating the energy transition.”

Dario Scaffardi, CEO of Saras, said:  “We at Saras have been focusing on the challenges of energy transition for some time now, and in recent years we have strengthened our skill base with a series of projects designed to reduce the refinery’s carbon footprint significantly.”

Due to its size, location, and structural characteristics, our Sarroch site is particularly suited to develop and host a green hydrogen production project with clear potential for development and growth, he addedd.

Saras has technological capabilities and know-how in producing and managing hydrogen and finding ways to decarbonise the hydrogen production process. It is using hydrogen in the refining process for hydrocracking and hydrotreatment processes.
