Bilfinger, Hydrogenious partner for scaling technology

The partnership will scale Hydrogenious’ LOHC plant systems and will help build joint large-volume hydrogen projects.

Bilfinger (industrial services provider) and Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies agreed to enable safe and efficient hydrogen transport.

The partnership aims to make green hydrogen commercially available on a large scale in Europe by offering stationary Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) plant infrastructure based on Hydrogenious’ proprietary technology.  The partners will also provide engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) and maintenance services for the owners and operators of the technology.

Hydrogenious’ LOHC technology is both an efficient and safe solution. In its storage plants, the hydrogen is chemically bonded to the LOHC material benzyltoluene, which can be transported in conventional logistics infrastructures similar to diesel. It can be released from the LOHC in Hydrogenious’ release plants while the carrier material is recyclable.

Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies has scheduled the construction of an industrial-scale LOHC storage plant at Chempark Dormagen (North Rhine-Westphalia, Cologne) for 2023/2024.

Christina Johansson, CFO of Bilfinger, said, “Green hydrogen plays a crucial role as a sustainable energy source for our customers and for European countries to achieve their climate goals.”

Dr Daniel Teichmann, founder and CEO of Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies, said, “By further improving the competitiveness of our technology through scale-up and standardisation, all players in the future green hydrogen value chains will benefit.“
