BayoTech and New Mexico Gas Company to build hydrogen hub

The hydrogen from the hub will be used as a blend of natural gas and supplied to other end users.

BayoTech, Inc. and New Mexico Gas Company to develop a new highly-efficient hydrogen production facility in Albuquerque, US.

The BayoTech-owned BayoGaaS™ Hydrogen Hub will be located on the New Mexico Gas Company property and provide hydrogen to support the utility’s decarbonisation goals. New Mexico Gas will use hydrogen in a pilot project for the company’s natural gas distribution system.

The hydrogen produced will also be supplied to other local customers, including retail hydrogen refueling stations and fuel cell fleet vehicles operators, and backup power systems.

The Albuquerque hydrogen hub is the first in a planned network of distributed hydrogen production hubs throughout the US and UK to offer locally produced hydrogen on a gas-as-a-service basis, revolutionising hydrogen supply. BayoTech’s patented hydrogen production technology uses 20-30% less energy, which is cost-effective and more environmentally friendly.

Locally produced hydrogen is delivered via BayoTech’s proprietary high-pressure gas transport and storage equipment, holding three times more hydrogen per trip than traditional equipment.

The site is anticipated to become operational in mid-2022. It will produce around 1,000 kg/day of high-purity hydrogen, enough to fill 200 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. When using hydrogen produced from natural gas, fuel cell vehicles have 40% lower well-to-wheels greenhouse gas emissions than current gasoline-powered vehicles.

The rapid scalability of BayoTech’s BayoGaaS™ Hydrogen Hubs is unique in the industry. Factory-built hydrogen production plants are transported to the site and quickly assembled. Initially, a 1 tonne/day hydrogen generator is installed while concurrently permitting and prepping the site to produce 2 tonnes/day, allowing for quick expansion in under six months when needed. As the market accelerates, BayoTech can expand to produce an additional 5 tonnes/day at the existing site to accommodate and be significant growth.
