ABO Energy sells German green hydrogen hub to Tyczka Hydrogen

ABO Energy has sold a green hydrogen production and refuelling hub in Huenfeld, Hesse, to Tyczka Hydrogen GmbH, marking a new ownership phase for a project designed to support hydrogen-powered buses and lorries in Germany.
The facility combines a 5-megawatt electrolyser with a 350-bar hydrogen refuelling station and a trailer filling station. It has been producing certified renewable hydrogen since August 2025, with annual output of up to 450 tonnes.
The project was developed by ABO Energy over several years, followed by 13 months of construction before it was commissioned in summer 2025. The company said the sale to Tyczka Hydrogen provides a strong new owner for the complex infrastructure project.
“We have successfully realised this complex project, from the planning stage through to construction and commissioning. We are therefore all the more delighted to have found a strong buyer in Tyczka Hydrogen,” said Dr Karsten Schlageter, Managing Director at ABO Energy.
The Huenfeld plant was among the first facilities in Germany to receive TÜV certification under the CertifHy EU RNFBO Voluntary Scheme for green hydrogen. RNFBO, or Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin, refers to renewable fuels produced without biological feedstocks and recognised under European sustainability rules.
The hydrogen produced at the site is intended for fuel cell buses and heavy-duty vehicles. Electricity for the electrolyser comes from wind and solar farms, allowing the facility to produce hydrogen using renewable power.
ABO Kraft & Wärme AG has managed the plant’s operations since it opened. The company’s involvement has supported the facility’s transition from development and construction into commercial operation.
The project has received €12 million in funding under Germany’s National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. Additional support is provided through the German Recovery and Resilience Plan and the European Recovery and Resilience Facility under the NextGenerationEU programme.
The funding framework is coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by Project Management Jülich.
The transaction strengthens Tyczka Hydrogen’s position in Germany’s emerging green hydrogen infrastructure market, while ABO Energy’s sale demonstrates the growing role of project developers in bringing renewable hydrogen facilities from planning and construction into operational ownership.
With Germany accelerating efforts to expand hydrogen infrastructure and reduce emissions from heavy transport, facilities such as the Huenfeld hub are expected to play a role in building a wider network for renewable hydrogen production, storage and vehicle refuelling.
