Proton Motor supplies HyShip 72 to Fincantieri; WEC Energy to co-fire hydrogen
The multiple HyShip 72 applications provide power supply for recreational, passenger, cargo, working, military ships and submarines.
Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH is now successfully delivering its high-tech innovation fuel cell system HyShip 72 to Fincantieri.
Two fully redundant HyShip 72 product designs were primarily adapted for the power supply of the electric powertrain and other consumers of the ‘ZEUS’ ship (Zero Emission Ultimate Ship).
The core of a singular ‘HyShip 72’ is two integrated Proton Motor stack modules ‘PM 400-120’. Both “HyShip” systems work redundant to each other. They will be supplemented with a battery system and the hydrogen storage system based on metal hydride to an emission-free electric drive train.
In addition, follow-up orders also include the collaboration in the project “Ma-Hy-Hy” (Marine-Hydrogen-Hybrid), which is being realised together with “Torqeedo GmbH” for the development of a marine high-voltage hybrid drive system with a battery and a hydrogen fuel cell. Proton Motor is also a technology partner in the “e-SHyIPS” project.
WEC Energy Group hydrogen power pilot program
WEC Energy Group will test hydrogen as a fuel source for power generation through co-firing hydrogen with natural gas at one of its power generation plants in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The project is expected to be one of the first hydrogen power pilot programs in the US. During the pilot project, hydrogen and natural gas will be mixed up to a 25%/75%t blend to power one of the generating units serving customers of Upper Michigan Energy Resources, a WEC Energy Group subsidiary. The project will provide key insights on how this could be replicated throughout the country, providing energy companies with a suite of solutions to reduce carbon emissions.
