Northern Petrochemical progresses with Alberta project
Greenview Industrial Gateway is ideal for new energy development due to its natural gas reserves.
Northern Petrochemical Corporation has signed a historic land purchase agreement with the Municipal District of Greenview for a 295-acre land to develop a carbon-neutral integrated ammonia and methanol complex, Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada.
The proposed complex will be located within the Greenview Industrial Gateway (GIG) and will produce blue ammonia and methanol by using the latest carbon capture and storage technologies to achieve a carbon-neutral process. Construction of the proposed complex is scheduled to start in the summer of 2023 with a proposed $2.5 billion investment.
The Municipal District of Greenview has also submitted an expression of interest to the provincial government to become a Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) hub, creating carbon capture and sequestration possibilities within the Greenview Industrial Gateway.
Northern Petrochemical also awarded KBR the license and basic engineering design for the ammonia-methanol co-production technology developed jointly by KBR and Johnson Matthey (JM). KBR is the global leading ammonia licensor and has licensed, engineered, and constructed more than 245 ammonia plants globally since the 1940s, whereas JM is a methanol licensor and has supplied its technology and catalysts for over 45 years and licensed over 100 grassroot methanol plants.
Invest Alberta has recently signed an MoU with Northern Petrochemical Corp to support their continued investment in the province and will secure a final investment decision for the facility.
The Government of Alberta has recently released its Hydrogen Roadmap, which outlines the enormous opportunity for government, industry and municipalities to grow Alberta’s hydrogen sector and position Alberta as an international leader in clean hydrogen.
