Sunfire to scale alkaline electrolysis production capacity
Before Sunfire’s SOEC technology can be used at an industrial scale, it has to be developed at full speed.
Sunfire will industrialise its pressurised alkaline electrolysis technology by installing a 500 MW/year alkaline electrolyser production site in Germany by 2023.
In the first phase, the company will be expanding its annual production capacity of pressurised alkaline electrolysers from 40 MW/year to around 500 MW/year by 2023. It plans to ramp up the capacity to over 1 GW/year, where the final investment decision should be made upon completion of site selection.
Sunfire is best known for innovative high-temperature electrolysers (SOEC), and it believes that SOEC will be the preferred electrolysis technology in various industries. To satisfy the growing demand for the technology, it will be expanding the production capacity for alkaline electrolysis to make it ready for hydrogen projects on the 100 MW scale.
Sunfire ascertains that the total capacity of installed plants is in the triple-digit megawatt range, but even demand in the EU alone is expected to rise to 40 GW by 2030. IEA estimates 850 GW of electrolysis capacity will be needed globally to reach climate neutrality by 2045.
Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire, said, “Ambitious regulatory initiatives to cut CO2 emissions in all sectors of the economy are fostering a rapid growth of the global hydrogen market until 2030.”
Bernhard Zwinz, Sunfire COO, said, “As soon as we start the mass-production of our alkaline electrolysers, the cost of producing electrolysers and, thus, renewable hydrogen will drop even further.”
