Pinera highlights Haru Oni at the Global Citizen event
He stressed abandoning the dependence on carbon-emitting fuels and using green hydrogen.
Sebastián Piñera, the President of Chile, on Sunday (26th September) highlighted the importance of the construction of the first green hydrogen plant in the south of Chile.
The President made the announcement at the Global Citizen event, which was attended by artists, activists, business leaders, philanthropists and world leaders coming together to defend the planet and overcome poverty.
In the mega event, he announced measures to defend the planet while highlighting green hydrogen production progress in Chile.
He said that the world cannot afford to continue on the current path and urged to replace carbon-emitting fuels with green hydrogen.
The Haru Oni project is expected to lead to the world’s first Green Hydrogen plant that, once fully operational next year, will produce climate-neutral synthetic fuel, which will reduce more than 100k tonnes/year of greenhouse gas emissions. The Haru Oni plant will use wind energy from Chile’s Magallanes region to produce carbon-neutral fuel. The plant will have a production capacity of 350 tonnes/year of methanol, 130k litres/year of gasoline.
In a separate development, recently Brazil’s Federation of Industries of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (Fiern) and Chilean Green Hydrogen Association (H2Chile), started cooperation on hydrogen production. The objective is to devise strategies for the production of green hydrogen. Chile wants to replace the fossil fuel that it imports with the green hydrogen it would produce. Both Brazil and Chile are almost at a similar stage when it comes to the production of hydrogen.
