Germany announces €8 Billion for 62 hydrogen projects

Germany is taking a major step in making its economy climate-neutral, focusing on the steel industry and the chemical industry.

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics and the Federal Ministry of Transport today (28th May) announced the selection of 62 large-scale hydrogen projects for state funding under a joint European hydrogen project.

These projects will be funded under PCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest). The 62 projects representing the entire value chain of the hydrogen market are selected from over 230 project outlines received. It is expected that projects will be approved by the European Commission under state aid law this year.

Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister of Economics, said, “We want to become number 1 in the world in hydrogen technologies.” He further added, “We are providing over 8 billion euros in federal and state funds for the 62 German projects selected today, and with the projects, we cover the entire value chain – from hydrogen generation and transport to industrial applications.”

Andreas Scheuer, Federal Transport Minister, said, “We are making Germany a hydrogen country. In doing so, we are rethinking mobility, European and holistic – from the energy system and drive technologies to the fueling infrastructure.”

Mr Scheuer further added, “In order to cover all areas of mobility with zero-emission solutions, we need technology openness. That is why we also support fuel cell technology as well as vehicle and component manufacturers, so as not to miss the boat internationally.”

The € 8 billion state funding is made up of federal and state funds. Around € 4.4 billion come from the Federal Ministry of Economics; up to € 1.4 billion from the Federal Ministry of Transport. The remaining funds are made available by the federal states.

Investments totalling €33 billion are to be triggered, including over € 20 billion from private investors.

In the BMWi department, 50 project outlines were selected, including generation plants of around a total of 2 GW of electrolysis capacity for green hydrogen production. That would account for 40% of the target set in the National Hydrogen Strategy of 5 GW by 2030. Germany also plans for hydrogen pipelines of around 1,700 km.

A substantial amount of CO2 can be saved in the steel industry, where ArcelorMittal, Stahl Holding Saar, Salzgitter Stahl and Thyssenkrupp Steel also submitted investment projects.

The Federal Ministry of Transport is funding 12 projects in the mobility sector, covering the development and production of fuel cell systems and vehicles – from cars and trucks to municipal vehicles. It will also promote the development of a nationwide and cross-border networked hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.
