Los Angeles aims green hydrogen at $1.50/kg by 2030

HyDeal Los Angeles intends to be a model of rapid acceleration for green hydrogen ecosystems throughout the nation.

The Green Hydrogen Coalition has been joined by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) today, and together they launched HyDeal LA, an initiative aiming to procure hydrogen at scale for $1.50/kg in the Los Angeles Basin by 2030.

Phase 1 of HyDeal LA goal is to establish a supply chain necessary to achieve $1.50/kg delivered green hydrogen in the LA Basin by ensuring production, storage, transport and delivery of green hydrogen at scale in Los Angeles.

HyDeal LA partners cover almost the whole value chain, including project developers, green hydrogen off-takers, integrators, equipment manufacturers, investors, and advisors, which can expedite the launching of a commercial green hydrogen cluster at scale. HyDeal LA leaders include:

  • Clifford Chance
  • Corporate Value Associates (CVA)
  • Cranmore Partners
  • Energeia
  • Marathon Capital
  • Mitsubishi Power
  • Sheppard Mullin
  • SoCalGas
  • Strategen
  • 174 Power Global

Martin Adams, General Manager at LADWP, said, “Green hydrogen is the key to reliably achieving 100% renewable energy.” LADWP Intermountain Power Project in Delta, Utah plans for a gas turbine designed and built to operate on 100% carbon-free green hydrogen by 2035.

Paul Browning, CEO of Mitsubishi Power Americas, said, “Mitsubishi Power is dedicated to achieving affordable green hydrogen costs in Los Angeles and around the world. Together with our customers and partners, we are creating a Change in Power.”

Dr. Henry Yun, CEO of 174 Power Global, said, “Green hydrogen presents a significant opportunity for our gigawatt-scale solar farms to deliver decarbonized energy to multiple sectors.”

Scott Drury, SoCalGas CEO, said, “Hydrogen will play an important part in helping SoCalGas reach our goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, in keeping utility bills affordable for families and businesses, and in keeping energy reliable and resilient as we make the transition.”

Janice Lin, President of the Green Hydrogen Coalition, said, “Green hydrogen is a gamechanger in achieving deep decarbonization of multiple sectors, and Los Angeles is the perfect place to launch the first HyDeal North America.”

Governor Newsom also stressed green hydrogen during the release of the May Revise Budget last Friday. The governor was also asked by the California Hydrogen Coalition for US$ 500 million, last week.

HyDeal LA is part of HyDeal North America, which is launched by the Green Hydrogen Coalition, dedicated to deploying green hydrogen at scale. HyDeal LA follows the example of Europe HyDeal Ambition which aims for 3.6 million tonnes/year of green hydrogen at €1.5/kg by 2030.

Los Angeles is the second-largest city in the US, though only have four transmission lines exist to bring LADWP’s out-of-basin generated electricity into the city. When energy demand rises, it is crucial to have reliable, in-basin power generation from existing power plants. To maintain in-basin generation and reach zero-carbon goals, the existing natural gas-fuelled power plants can be converted to green hydrogen-fuelled power turbines.
