Plug Power to install 120 MW PEM electrolyser in NY, the largest in the region
Plug Power Inc. is going to build a 120 MW PEM electrolyser powered by clean hydropower to produce 45 tonnes/day green hydrogen. The plant will be the largest green hydrogen production facility in North America and will be constructed in New York, US.
This $290 million investment in green hydrogen production will help in decarbonising freight-transportation and logistics. Andy Marsh, CEO for Plug Power, said, “Plug Power’s future rightfully revolves around building the green hydrogen economy.”
Besides the hydrogen plant, it will also build a 450 MW electric substation located in the New York Science, Technology and Advanced Manufacturing Park (STAMP), serving the entire site. STAMP is a 1,250-acre mega site located at the centre of upstate New York’s largest population, research, and workforce training hubs. This mega-site is strategically located in the New York Power Authority (NYPA) low-cost hydropower zone. The plant will be serviced by high-capacity, 100% renewable, reliable and local power sources.
This project will also join the company existing project pipeline. Plug Power has recently announced its plan to produce green hydrogen up to 500 tonnes/day by 2025 and 1,000 tonnes/ day by 2028.
The news came the same day when Plug Power announced the completion of the $1.6 billion capital investment partnership with SK Group, one of the leading South Korean business groups. Both partners want to accelerate hydrogen as an alternative energy source in Asian markets.
