Lhyfe and STRABAG partner to accelerate green hydrogen projects in Germany

Lhyfe and STRABAG have signed a strategic co-development partnership aimed at accelerating the rollout of green hydrogen projects in Germany, as Europe’s hydrogen sector gains momentum under new regulatory frameworks.

The agreement brings together French green hydrogen producer Lhyfe and Austrian construction and infrastructure group STRABAG to jointly identify, develop and implement renewable hydrogen projects. The companies said the collaboration could later expand into other European markets.

The partnership comes as Germany advances the transposition of the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III) into national law, creating binding targets for the use of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) across parts of industry. The new framework is expected to provide greater long-term certainty for hydrogen demand and support investment decisions throughout the sector.

Lhyfe said the evolving regulatory environment marks a significant turning point for the European hydrogen market by establishing more predictable demand for renewable hydrogen.

Under the agreement, the two companies will combine Lhyfe’s operational expertise in green hydrogen production with STRABAG’s engineering, construction and infrastructure capabilities.

Lhyfe currently operates four RFNBO-certified green hydrogen production facilities, with two additional sites under construction. The company said it has also developed one of Europe’s largest fleets of hydrogen transport containers alongside multiple hydrogen storage sites.

STRABAG, meanwhile, brings experience across the full lifecycle of infrastructure projects, including engineering, financing, construction and long-term operations. The company has increasingly focused on renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure development as part of its broader decarbonisation strategy.

The companies said the partnership is intended to accelerate project implementation, reduce development and execution risks, and support the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure in Germany and potentially elsewhere in Europe.

Wolfgang Zechmeister, Division Manager at STRABAG, described green hydrogen as an important tool for decarbonising energy-intensive industries and said the agreement would strengthen the company’s hydrogen project development activities.

Luc Graré, Chief Strategy Officer at Lhyfe, said the collaboration comes at a decisive stage for the market, adding that combining STRABAG’s industrial and construction expertise with Lhyfe’s operational hydrogen experience creates a strong platform for scaling projects more rapidly.

Germany is widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading future hydrogen markets, with policymakers seeking to accelerate industrial decarbonisation and reduce dependence on fossil fuels through large-scale deployment of renewable hydrogen technologies.
