PepsiCo and Fertiberia Expand Low-Carbon Farming Partnership Across Europe

PepsiCo and Fertiberia have announced a long-term collaboration aimed at reducing agricultural emissions across Europe through the large-scale use of low-carbon fertiliser.

Under the agreement, Fertiberia will supply PepsiCo with up to 150,000 tonnes annually of its green hydrogen-based fertiliser, Impact Zero, by 2030. The programme is expected to cover approximately 400,000 acres (162,000 hectares) of farmland used to grow crops including potatoes, corn, sunflower, sugar beet and rapeseed — key ingredients used in popular snack brands such as Lay’s, Doritos, Ruffles and Cheetos.

The initiative will initially roll out across France, Romania, Serbia, Greece and Turkey, while also expanding existing operations in Spain and Portugal.

The partnership follows a successful pilot programme in Spain and Portugal, where the use of Fertiberia’s low-carbon fertiliser reduced emissions from potato farming by up to 15% and corn farming by up to 20%.

Fertiberia’s fertiliser is produced using green hydrogen rather than natural gas, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 63%. The company also integrates technologies such as slow-release formulations and biological inhibitors to improve nutrient efficiency, enhance crop yields and minimise nitrogen losses.

Combined with PepsiCo’s existing supplier agreements, the partnership is expected to help ensure that around 50% of the fertiliser used across PepsiCo’s European supply chain comes from low-carbon sources by 2030.

Archana Jagannathan, Chief Sustainability Officer for PepsiCo Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: “We’re working to lead the way on regenerative agriculture and helping to build a more resilient agricultural supply chain. Switching to low-carbon fertiliser is one of the strongest levers we have to reduce agricultural emissions.”

Alongside the fertiliser programme, the companies will provide farmers with technical support and precision agriculture tools designed to optimise fertiliser application and monitor regenerative farming practices.

David Herrero, Chief Operating Officer at Fertiberia, said the collaboration demonstrates how innovation and partnerships can accelerate climate action while supporting food security across Europe.

The initiative forms part of PepsiCo’s wider sustainability strategy, which includes a target to implement regenerative, restorative or protective agricultural practices across 10 million acres globally by 2030. The company is also aiming to reduce Scope 3 forest, land and agriculture greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 compared with a 2022 baseline.
