Masdar teams up with OMV to build a 140-MW green hydrogen project in Austria

Austrian energy group OMV AG and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) have entered into a joint venture to finance, construct, and operate a 140-MW green hydrogen electrolyser plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria.
Construction began in September, and the facility is scheduled to become operational in 2027. Under the agreement, OMV will retain the majority share, while Masdar will hold 49% ownership. The transaction is anticipated to be finalized in early 2026.
OMV stated that it will supply renewable electricity for the project and will own the produced green hydrogen. The company already runs a 10-MW electrolyser plant in Schwechat.
This collaboration builds on a letter of intent signed in April, laying the groundwork for joint efforts in green hydrogen, synthetic sustainable aviation fuels (e-SAF), and synthetic chemicals in the UAE and Central and Northern Europe.
“This joint venture combines Masdar’s two decades of renewable energy expertise with OMV’s industrial strengths, opening new commercial opportunities across Europe,” said Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber.
“Through this strategic partnership, OMV and Masdar have achieved one of the largest foreign direct investments in Austria in recent years. Together, we are building Europe’s fifth-largest hydrogen plant, right here in Austria,” added Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer.
