Salzgitter AG issues tender to meet hydrogen demands for the first stage of its SALCOS® initiative
Salzgitter AG is putting hydrogen requirements out to tender for the first stage of the SALCOS ® – Salzgitter Low CO 2 Steelmaking transformation program. In a structured process, companies can now register to participate in the tender and submit their offers in the further process.
Salzgitter AG will be able to utilize up to 150,000 t of hydrogen annually at the Salzgitter site as part of the first SALCOS ® expansion stage. Part of this will be generated from 2026 in the company’s own 100 MW electrolysis plant at the Salzgitter site. This is currently being built on the factory premises. The production volume will be around 9,000 t per year.
External supplies of hydrogen are to begin in 2027, provided that the connection to the hydrogen core network has been established or other supply channels can be implemented in individual cases. Possible deliveries starting later will also be accepted.
Gunnar Groebler said, “To fully exploit the CO2 savings potential of SALCOS ®, we need a timely connection of the Salzgitter site to the hydrogen core network. Once the state aid approval has been obtained, we are counting on an early application from FNB Gas (1) for the core network to the Federal Network Agency and expect a reliable timetable for the construction of the hydrogen core network, the construction of which must be tackled decisively.” (1 = FNB Gas is the association of the supra-regional gas transport companies in Germany.)
Concrete hydrogen deliveries are already planned with the first partners. The public was informed of this at the end of April.
