Capital Power orders gas turbines from Mitsubishi Power
Mitsubishi Power will supply two M501JAC gas turbines to Genesee Units 1 and 2, in Alberta, Canada. Capital Power, an Alberta based power producer who owned Genesee power station, ordered these turbines to convert the plant from coal to natural gas.
The new turbines will also increase net production capacity to 1,360 MW from the existing 860 MW. The natural gas will also reduce carbon emission intensity by about 60%, in compliance with the Alberta Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) benchmark. It is expected that Genesee Unit 1 and unit 2 be will be completed by 2023 and 2024 respectively.
The M501JAC gas turbines can also utilise hydrogen, and its ratio in the natural gas mixture can go up to 30%. These turbines can be converted in the future to run 100% on hydrogen.
President and CEO of Capital Power, Brian Vaasjo, said that the company is committed to a low-carbon future and aiming to be net carbon neutral before 2050. The new gas turbines installation will leverage the company to accommodate more renewable energy, planning to add ~260 MW of solar and wind power by 2022.
