Toyota and partners progressing towards hydrogen-powered city project
To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, Japan needs to take solid initiatives to build sustainable societies.
Toyota Motor Corporation and Fukushima Prefecture have started discussing with partners about building a city for a new future that uses hydrogen and technologies produced in Fukushima Prefecture.
Fukushima Prefecture focuses on hydrogen and is working on one of the first models for a future hydrogen society.
The three-company partnership of Isuzu, Hino, and Toyota wants to contribute to building a new city of the future in Fukushima.
The aim is to develop an implementation model for hydrogen-based deliveries at supermarkets and convenience stores.
Initially, hydrogen will be produced at multiple sites in the prefecture, including Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R), make use of the hydrogen, introduce several fuel cell trucks for deliveries, optimise operational management and hydrogen refilling schedules through the use of connected technologies, and carry out energy management that caters to the prevailing local conditions.
The plan is to first build an implementation model for a city with 300,000 people before expanding the model nationwide.
The partners will also operate fuel cell kitchen vans and medical cars and use hydrogen at stores and plants in Fukushima Prefecture to reduce supply chain carbon emissions.
