Woodside announces H2Perth mega hydrogen project
H2Perth project would produce low cost, low carbon hydrogen-based energy to enable increased renewable power generation in Western Australia.
Woodside (an Australian energy producer) today (25th October) has unveiled plans to build a mega hydrogen and ammonia production facility at a site in southern metropolitan Perth with the support of the State Government of Western Australia.
The project, called H2Perth, would produce about 1500 tonnes/day of hydrogen for export in the form of ammonia and liquid hydrogen in the second half of the decade. The project is expected to see over A$1 billion (US$ 750 million) in investment.
The project would also boost local hydrogen demand, particularly in the transport sector and local heavy industry. Subject to necessary commercial and regulatory approvals and a final investment decision, construction is expected to start in 2024. Local hydrogen refuelling stations can be built independently of the export project timelines and operate as early as 2023.
The site would be built on around 130 hectares of vacant industrial land to be leased from the State in the Kwinana Strategic Industrial Area and Rockingham Industry Zone. The project would be built in stages, but once fully completed, it claimed to be one of the world’s largest facilities of its kind.
The land is leased from the State Government in the Kwinana and Rockingham areas is close to existing gas, power, water and port infrastructure and a skilled local residential workforce. These advantages will make a massive difference to the cost of supply and schedule and help H2Perth deliver competitively priced hydrogen to customers.
Meg O’Neill, Woodside CEO, said, “We intend to use our skills and financial strength to add new energy products and lower-carbon technologies and services to our portfolio, which can be scaled to meet customer demand.”
