Volt Carbon secures initial vermiculite processing order

Volt Carbon Technologies has received its first commercial purchase order from Northern Ore Resources under a recently signed toll processing agreement, marking an early milestone in the companies’ plans to commercialise vermiculite processing technology.

The initial order covers the processing of 40,000 metric tonnes of vermiculite and represents the first annual commitment under the agreement announced earlier this month. Volt Carbon said the order follows the completion of several commercial milestones, including the transfer of a 2.5% equity stake in Northern Ore to the company and the start of process optimisation work at its facility in Guelph, Ontario.

The agreement provides for a processing fee of US$100 per metric tonne, which the companies said could generate around US$4 million in annual processing revenue, subject to the terms of the contract and customer demand.

Volt Carbon said preliminary testing indicated the vermiculite feedstock requires no more than two passes through its proprietary dry air classification process to remove sand and grit, fewer than is typically required for graphite materials processed using the same technology. The company said the results could support a simplified commercial processing flow.

To support future growth, Volt Carbon plans to develop a commercial air classification system capable of processing up to 100,000 metric tonnes of material annually. If the facility reaches full utilisation at the same processing fee, the company said it would represent potential annual processing revenue of around US$10 million, although it stressed that the figure is illustrative and should not be regarded as financial guidance or a revenue forecast.

The company estimates that approximately US$750,000 in capital expenditure will be required to deploy the commercial processing system. Volt Carbon said it is evaluating a range of financing options, including internally generated revenue, government incentive programmes, warrant exercises and other strategic funding sources, with the aim of limiting shareholder dilution.

Management also said recent changes to Canada’s Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) programme could provide access to refundable government funding to support research, development and commercialisation activities.

Volt Carbon continues to target commercial deployment of the larger production system in 2028. Before then, the company plans to complete process optimisation, produce engineering and customer qualification samples, and advance the design, financing and construction of the commercial facility, subject to financing, regulatory approvals and market demand.

Northern Ore President Aaron Hopkins said the companies had made strong progress since signing the processing agreement, adding that product quality and consistency would be particularly important as the company develops international markets for its vermiculite products.

Volt Carbon Chief Executive Officer V-Bond Lee said the initial purchase order and the start of process optimisation represented important steps towards commercialisation. He added that early technical results supported the development of a more streamlined continuous processing system as the company works towards its planned 2028 commercial launch.

The announcement reflects growing interest in advanced mineral processing technologies as companies seek to improve the quality of industrial minerals while reducing processing costs and supporting the development of domestic critical minerals supply chains.
