Sonatrach and Eni partner for developing green hydrogen projects

Sonatrach and Eni's partnership will support the development of gas and green hydrogen projects.

Sonatrach Group and the Italian Eni Group signed an MoU aimed at accelerating the development of the gas fields discovered in Algeria and reducing the carbon footprint by exploiting green hydrogen.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed today between the two parties is a new stone added to the building of fruitful cooperation in energy between Algeria and Italy and will work to strengthen relations between the two countries.

This memorandum of understanding will evaluate the gas capacities available to carry out an accelerated development of the fields discovered by Sonatrach. The volume of gas produced from the regions covered by this memorandum should reach approximately 3 billion cubic meters annually. It will help increase Algeria’s export capacity to Italy via the Enrico Matteï/Transmed transcontinental gas pipeline.

This agreement will also cover a technical and economic evaluation of the experimental green hydrogen project at the Bir Rebaa North field, which aims to reduce the carbon footprint emitted by the gas production plant in this field.

It is consistent with the sustainable development strategy adopted by Sonatrach for the development of technology with a positive impact on the environment and projects that allow the reduction of the carbon footprint resulting from the Group’s activity.
