Siemens and Shomax Partner to Boost US Fertiliser Supply with Green Ammonia

Siemens has joined forces with Shomax Energy to develop new zero-carbon fertiliser production facilities in the United States, aimed at strengthening domestic supply and improving price stability for farmers.
The collaboration, formalised through a memorandum of understanding, will focus on producing NitroLEAF, a green ammonia-based fertiliser made using hydrogen generated from renewable-powered electrolysis. The project is intended to reduce reliance on imported nitrogen fertilisers, which currently account for a significant share of US supply.
The companies say the initiative comes at a time of heightened volatility in fertiliser markets, driven by global supply chain disruptions and fluctuating natural gas prices. By eliminating fossil fuels from the production process, NitroLEAF is expected to offer more predictable and potentially lower costs for farmers.
Irfan Verjee said the partnership would help accelerate deployment of the company’s green ammonia technology.
“Our hydrocarbon-free, solar-powered process is insulated from fossil fuel price swings, allowing us to provide stable pricing at a significant discount,” he said, adding that the project could reshape the fertiliser market.
Tony White highlighted Siemens’ role in providing advanced industrial technologies, including digital twin systems, process automation and electrical infrastructure.
The integration of these tools is expected to optimise plant design and operations, reduce costs and improve efficiency and safety throughout the production lifecycle.
The first facility is planned for North Texas, positioning it close to major agricultural regions while supporting regional economic development and domestic manufacturing capacity.
The partners say the project could serve as a model for scaling sustainable industrial production in the US, while also contributing to food security by ensuring a more resilient and locally sourced fertiliser supply.
