Plug Power orders two hydrogen liquefaction plants

Plug Power has placed an order for two 15 tonnes/day liquefaction plants from Chart Industries, Inc. The plants will be installed in Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, with the delivery in the second quarter next year and operation at the end of 2022.

The plant will be fed with hydrogen produced from Plug Power’s in-house electrolysers and renewable electricity. Plug Power plans to build a green hydrogen generation network in the US. It plans to produce 500 tonnes/day of green hydrogen globally by 2025 and making it double by 2028.

Jill Evanko, Chart’s CEO and President said “We are proud to be a partner to Plug Power as they execute on their strategic global buildout in the hydrogen industry.”

Chart’s hydrogen liquefaction plants use the company helium refrigeration technology and the associated rotating equipment. The order includes the supply of the hydrogen liquefaction system, tanks for storing liquid hydrogen, and trailer loadout bays. Liquid hydrogen storage ceases the needs for high-pressure cylinders and tanks and is a more compact and energy-dense solution than gaseous storage.
