Plug Power breaks ground on hydrogen plant in Georgia

The plant is part of the Plug Power strategic plan to offer competitive green hydrogen to customers.

Plug Power Inc. broke ground on the site of a 15 tonnes/day liquid green hydrogen production plant in Camden County, Georgia, US.

The US$ 84 million plant will produce liquid green hydrogen using 100% renewable energy serving the southeastern US market. The plant is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

It is expected that the global hydrogen market will reach 500 to 800 million tonnes/year by 2050, satisfying 20% of global energy demand.

Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power, said, “Green hydrogen is the environmentally-conscious solution companies need.”

Sanjay Shrestha, GM of energy solutions Plug Power, said, “This Georgia plant is an important step for developing North America’s first force-majeure resilient green hydrogen supply network. This helps Plug Power, our customers and, more importantly, the broader hydrogen economy.”

With Plug Power’s existing plant in Tennessee, acquired in 2020, and its PEM stack and electrolyser Innovation Center in Rochester, New York, this plant further strengthens the Plug Power position in the green hydrogen ecosystem.

In its latest quarterly update, Plug Power said that it shipped 3,666 GenDrive units and had revenue associated with 16 hydrogen infrastructure systems for Q2 2021 compared to 2,683 GenDrive units and four hydrogen infrastructure systems in the second quarter of 2020. That amounts to the net revenue reached US$ 124.6 million in Q2 compared to $68 million in the same quarter last year.

Last month, Plug Power and Apex Clean Energy announced a 345 MW wind power purchase agreement (PPA) and a green hydrogen production facility development services agreement. The plant being co-developed by both partners will be the first and largest wind-supplied hydrogen project in the US and the largest onshore wind-powered project across the globe. Once operational, the plant is anticipated to produce over 30 tonnes/day of clean liquid hydrogen.
