Ballard receives fuel cell orders for hydrogen buses in Europe

Ballard sees a strong growth ramp over the coming decade as its bus OEM customers deliver Ballard-powered FCEBs to transit operators.

Ballard Power Systems today (4th November) announced receiving orders for a total of 40 FCmoveTM-HD (70kW) modules for planned deployment in hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs) across Europe in 2022.

These fuel cell buses are being deployed in France, Germany, and the UK. Rouen, France, is deploying its first fleet of zero-emission FCEBs powered by Ballard fuel cell technology, and Pau, France, is expanding their existing Ballard powered FCEB fleet. The area of Frankfurt, Germany, is also increasing the number of zero-emission FCEBs powered by Ballard fuel cell technology. There are now four French cities and six German cities with Ballard fuel cell buses in service or development.

Brighton aims for a zero-emissions goal by 2030 for its fleet of nearly 500 buses. Brighton’s initial order of 20 FCEBs is the first phase of FCEB development, with supportive funding from the JIVE program and the UK’s Ultra Low Emission Bus Scheme.

With today’s order, there are now around 150 fuel cell modules with Ballard to support the deployment of an additional 150 FCEBs in the European market.

Recently, Ballard Power Systems and Forsee Power also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to partner for developing fully integrated fuel cell and battery solutions, optimised for performance, cost and installation for heavy-duty hydrogen mobility applications.
