Azbil Raises 2030 Emissions Reduction Target Following SBTi Validation

Japanese automation specialist Azbil Corporation has strengthened its near-term climate commitments, increasing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target for 2030 after securing validation from the Science Based Targets initiative.

The company announced it will now aim to cut emissions from its direct operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 60 per cent by the 2030 financial year, up from its previous target of 55 per cent compared with 2017 levels. The revised target has also been expanded to include both the parent company and its consolidated subsidiaries.

Azbil said the update reflects faster-than-expected progress, having already achieved its earlier 55 per cent reduction goal in the 2024 financial year.

The new target has been formally recognised by the SBTi as an updated near-term science-based target, aligning the company with global best practice in corporate climate action.

The move forms part of Azbil’s broader strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, a goal that covers its entire value chain, including indirect emissions (Scope 3). Under this long-term plan, the company aims to reduce total emissions by at least 90 per cent from 2017 levels, with any remaining emissions to be neutralised.

Looking ahead, Azbil said it would intensify decarbonisation efforts by deploying its proprietary energy-saving technologies and increasing the use of renewable energy across its operations.

The company, guided by its philosophy of “human-centred automation”, stated it remains committed to addressing global challenges such as climate change while contributing to the development of a sustainable, carbon-neutral society.

In addition to its operational targets, Azbil is also working to cut Scope 3 emissions across its value chain by 33 per cent by 2030, signalling a broader push to reduce its overall environmental footprint.
