Turkey’s Tupras unveils plans for hydrogen and SAF
Tupras will focus on green hydrogen, SAF, sustainable refining, biofuels and zero-carbon power.
Tupras (leading refinery company in Turkey) has announced its ‘Strategic Transformation Plan’, which will see investment in new energy sources such as Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), green hydrogen and zero-carbon electricity.
The investments will be made in new energy sources and the contribution of energy efficiency projects to reduce its carbon emissions from its operations by 27% by 2030 compared to 2017 and be carbon neutral in 2050.
The first stage aims to allocate the bulk of its new energy investments to zero-carbon electricity facilities to establish an integrated business model with green hydrogen production. It also foresees significant breakthroughs in biofuels and electrolysis plant investments.
Its Strategic Transformation Plan will focus on four business areas: Sustainable Refining, Biofuels, Zero Carbon Electricity, and Green Hydrogen.
Tupras currently uses hydrogen in refinery processes and is claimed to be the largest hydrogen producer in Turkey. It has completed the installation of the first stage Solar Power Plant in Batman and will establish a Solar Power Plant in Kırıkkale. It will focus primarily on its fields and mostly on green hydrogen production through electrolysers.
It aims to neutralise its emissions from hydrogen production by 2040 by gradually switching to green hydrogen production from 2025. It also plans to sell green hydrogen to logistics and heavy transport sectors by 2030.
It is expected that 30% of Ebitda to come from sales of new business lines, Sustainable Aviation Fuel, green hydrogen and zero-carbon electricity by 2035.
İbrahim Yelmenoğlu, GM of Tüpraş said, “Our aim is to strengthen our position as Turkey’s largest industrial company and to lead our country’s clean energy transformation by producing different types of energy with an integrated business model in a carbon-neutral way.”
