Snam and Shell to develop hydrogen projects

Both companies to develop joint initiatives in hydrogen, energy efficiency and sustainable mobility.

Snam (an infrastructure company) and Shell Energy Italia (leading energy company) have signed an MoU to work together on energy transition issues at the domestic and international levels.

The cooperation will initially focus on hydrogen development and may also extend to energy efficiency and sustainable mobility projects. Snam and Shell will share their expertise for the study and possible implementation of joint projects aimed at using hydrogen in industrial sectors and its transport through the existing gas infrastructure.

Previously, Shell Energy Italia and Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (Enea) signed a three-year collaboration agreement for the R&D of innovative technologies in the hydrogen field, focusing on the decarbonisation of energy-intensive sectors. The goal is to create sustainable energy solutions and promote the conversion of industrial processes to hydrogen, mainly green hydrogen, to support the country’s energy transition. The agreement provides for creating specific working groups for research activities, joint feasibility studies and analysis of industrial plants with high energy consumption such as steel, cement, glass, ceramics, paper and aluminium.

Shell and Enea agreement also include innovative and technologically advanced solutions for increasing the production of green hydrogen through water electrolysis projects integrated and powered by the generation of renewable solar energy, the storage processes of hydrogen and use in gas distribution networks.
