Exolum to develop green hydrogen plant and refuelling station in Spain
The Fusion and Exolum project is consistent with Spain’s goal to develop a comprehensive hydrogen refuelling corridor.
Fusion Fuel Green PLC (a green hydrogen technology company) today (6th October) announced to have signed a contract with Exolum (a European fuel logistics and storage provider) to develop a solar-to-hydrogen plant to supply green hydrogen to Madrid, Spain in 2022.
The partners will develop a 0.42 MW PEM electrolyser plant and hydrogen refuelling station. Fusion Fuel will install 21 of its Hevo-Solar units along with a co-located refuelling station, which will serve as proof of concept of hydrogen for mobility applications. Besides producing hydrogen from solar radiation during the daytime, the plant would double its production by leveraging other renewable energy sources to produce hydrogen at night.
Exolum will invest nearly € 2 million in building the green hydrogen production plant. The plant is expected to be fully operational during the second half of 2022 and will produce approximately 60 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
The production plant will also represent the first milestone in the commercialisation of green hydrogen for mobility applications, which is the objective of a recent alliance named ‘WINforH2’ established by Exolum, Naturgy and Enagás for the development of a network enabling mobility across the Iberian Peninsula with green hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Fusion Fuel’s Head of Business Development, João Wahnon, said, “It will be the first ever third-party sale of our integrated solar-to-hydrogen technology, which will supply the green hydrogen for one of Spain’s first hydrogen refuelling stations.”
Andres Suárez, Exolum’s Global Strategy & Innovation Lead, said, “Conversations are already being held with potential hydrogen users, who have expressed their interest in accessing a fixed facility for the supply of green hydrogen in the Madrid Region, thus supporting their plans to incorporate such vector into their heavy vehicle fleets, both buses and lorries.”
Previously, Fusion Fuel received approval of € 4.3 million from Portugal’s Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficient Use of Resources (Poseur) for its proposed HEVO-Sul project in Sines, Portugal. The Portuguese government has allocated €40 million in direct grants for the Poseur program to support the production of green hydrogen and other renewable gases.
