bp signs several agreements to support UK blue hydrogen plans
Teesside has all the attributes of a world-class clean hydrogen hub, such as natural resources, concentrated demand, the potential for hydrogen storage, CCUS and pipelines.
bp today (5th August) announced agreements with several new potential customers for its proposed clean hydrogen production facility in Teesside in north-east England.
bp has now signed MoUs with four potential customers: CF Fertilisers, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Sembcorp Energy UK and Alfanar Company. These can support and accelerate the development of the Teesside hydrogen cluster and the decarbonisation of industrial users in the area.
CF Fertilisers (a leading global producer of ammonia and ammonia-based fertilisers products) to scope the supply of clean hydrogen as fuel to reduce emissions at its Billingham plant, whereas feedstock sourced CO2 would be sequestered via the Northern Endurance Partnership project.
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (a leading global producer of chemical products) to scope the supply of clean hydrogen to its methyl methacrylate production plant in Teesside, which was previously operated as Lucite International.
Sembcorp Energy UK (owner and operator of utilities and services infrastructure at Wilton International, an industrial park in Teesside) to scope the supply of clean hydrogen to its combined heat and power plants and develop hydrogen infrastructure at Wilton International enable hydrogen supply to third parties.
Alfanar Company (an energy solution company) to scope the supply of clean hydrogen to Alfanar’s underdevelopment waste-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Teesside. Alfanar Company is aiming to develop low carbon materials using clean hydrogen as a feedstock for production.
Louise Jacobsen Plutt, bp’s Senior VP of hydrogen and CCUS, “While the impact of investments may be felt most acutely in the north-east, the decarbonisation benefit of H2Teesside is expected to be felt countrywide.”
In March 2021, bp unveiled its plans for a clean hydrogen facility in Teesside (H2Teesside), aiming to produce up to 1GW of ‘blue’ hydrogen – 20% of the UK’s hydrogen target – by 2030. It signed MoUs to scope hydrogen supply to chemicals manufacturer Venator and gas distributor Northern Gas Networks.
bp has also launched an online portal for the UK supply sector to participate in the project development.
