Hystar launches 20 MW electrolyser system for large-scale hydrogen projects

Hystar AS has launched Orion, a 20 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser cluster designed to accelerate deployment of large-scale green hydrogen production projects.

The new system is based on Hystar’s patented PEM technology and is intended to improve efficiency, flexibility and scalability for industrial hydrogen applications. The company said Orion delivers high efficiency across the full operating range while maintaining stable performance in demanding industrial environments.

Designed around a modular cluster-based architecture, each Orion unit operates independently, enabling greater operational flexibility and wider turn-down capability compared with conventional electrolyser configurations. The skid-mounted design is also intended to simplify transportation, installation and integration into larger hydrogen facilities.

Fredrik Mowill, Chief Executive Officer of Hystar, said the launch represents a step towards greater standardisation of industrial-scale green hydrogen deployment.

He said the combination of modularity and efficiency could help developers scale projects more rapidly while lowering both capital expenditure and operating costs.

The launch also builds on Hystar’s collaboration with McDermott to develop a turnkey 100 MW green hydrogen plant design aimed at reducing technical complexity and shortening project delivery timelines.

According to the company, the integrated plant concept is designed to provide customers with a ready-to-deploy hydrogen production solution that improves scalability, enhances safety and reduces procurement risk.

As governments and industrial sectors continue expanding investment in low-carbon hydrogen infrastructure, manufacturers are increasingly focused on standardised electrolyser platforms capable of supporting rapid deployment at utility and industrial scale.

Hystar said Orion strengthens its position within the growing global hydrogen sector by enabling more cost-effective and operationally flexible green hydrogen production for energy, industrial and infrastructure applications.
