Cepsa sign an alliance to reinforce the supply of renewable energy to their green hydrogen projects
Grupo Ibereólica Renovables and Cepsa have signed an agreement that will allow Cepsa to support long-term renewable electricity supply for its green hydrogen generation plants, located in the company’s Energy Parks in Andalusia, as well as for its network of service stations.
This renewable energy will come from a portfolio of projects of up to 5 GW, mainly wind, which is being developed by Grupo Ibereólica Renovables and is in an advanced state of planning.
The agreement reinforces the viability of the projects of Grupo Ibereólica Renovables by contemplating the long-term sale of electricity from the aforementioned projects, which are being developed in the provinces of Burgos, Palencia, Valladolid, Zamora, Ávila and Cáceres, and that it plans to be ready in 2026. Specifically, there are 9 wind projects, 4 photovoltaic and 2 hybrid that would generate an annual energy equivalent to the consumption of more than four million homes and would avoid the emission of 5.5 million tons of CO2 per year.
The significant weight of wind energy in the Grupo Ibereólica Renovables portfolio optimizes access to renewable energy for Cepsa’s green hydrogen projects, by complementing the wind production curve with that of the solar parks developed by Cepsa. The company already has 17 photovoltaic projects under development in Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Extremadura and the Community of Madrid, with a capacity of 2.1 GW, of which 1.1 GW already have network access, impact statement (DIA) and prior administrative authorization.
Carlos Barrasa stated, “Through this alliance with Grupo Ibereólica Renovables, one of the main players in the renewable energy sector in Spain, we are reinforcing long-term access, and at a stable and competitive price, of sustainable energy with which to promote the development of our green hydrogen and biofuel projects, being complementary to the development of our renewable energy projects ”.
For his part, Gregorio Álvarez highlighted, “ Our Group’s alliance with one of the main players in the energy sector, such as Cepsa, constitutes a fundamental lever for the development of our portfolio of projects of renewable generation in Spain in the medium and long term, and reinforces our determined commitment to the decarbonisation of the energy matrix as a means of promoting a more sustainable world ”.
With these projects, Cepsa seeks to sustainably cover the energy consumption of its industrial centers, especially for the production of green hydrogen, as well as supply the ultra-fast charging points that it is installing in its network of service stations for electric vehicles. Through its Positive Motion strategy, the company wants to lead sustainable mobility and the production of green hydrogen and biofuels in Spain and Portugal by 2030.
With this alliance, Grupo Ibereólica Renovables seeks to consolidate its platform of renewable generation projects in Spain, consolidating its position as one of the main benchmarks in the renewable energy sector.
