Valmet to automate Finland’s first CO₂ liquefaction plant at biogas facility

Valmet has secured an order to supply its automation technology for what is set to become Finland’s first CO₂ liquefaction plant of its kind, supporting the country’s transition towards carbon capture and circular economy solutions.
The Finnish technology company will deliver its Valmet DNAe Distributed Control System (DCS) to Suomen Biovoima Oy for a new carbon capture facility being built at Auris Energia’s biogas plant in Mäntsälä.
The project represents a significant step in integrating carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) into biogas production by capturing carbon dioxide generated during the production of biogas and biomethane rather than releasing it into the atmosphere.
Using Suomen Biovoima’s technology, the captured CO₂ will be purified and liquefied before being supplied for industrial applications, including concrete manufacturing, where the carbon dioxide is permanently bound within building materials. The approach converts emissions into a valuable industrial raw material while helping reduce the carbon footprint of renewable energy production.
Mikko Bengts, Sales Manager at Suomen Biovoima Oy, said the project marks an important milestone in developing more advanced and sustainable biogas technologies.
“This project is an important step for us in developing more advanced and sustainable biogas and biomethane solutions. By capturing and utilizing CO₂, we can turn emissions into a valuable product while improving overall efficiency,” he said.
“Collaboration with Valmet allows us to bring modern automation into our solutions and scale these innovations in future projects.”
Valmet’s DNAe automation platform will provide advanced process control, real-time monitoring and automated operation of the liquefaction plant. The company said the system will improve energy efficiency, optimise the use of raw materials and reduce the need for manual intervention through secure, automated plant operation.
The automation system will also provide comprehensive monitoring, reporting and performance analysis, enabling Auris Energia to track key performance indicators and maintain consistent operational performance.
Matti Miinalainen, Senior Sales Manager for Valmet’s Automation business area, said the project demonstrates how digital automation can enhance both sustainability and operational efficiency.
“In this project, we provide a cybersecure, modern, and robust Valmet DNAe system, while Suomen Biovoima brings their unique process know-how. Together, we create real added value to Auris Energia’s biogas plant,” he said.
“This project is a great example of how automation can support both sustainability and business performance.”
Valmet said the project has been designed with a long-term lifecycle approach, allowing continuous system upgrades, technical support and future development to help maintain plant performance and maximise the return on investment over time.
The delivery will be completed in stages, with the main automation system scheduled for delivery in November 2026. Installation is expected to take place in December, with commissioning planned during the first quarter of 2027.
While the financial value of the contract has not been disclosed, the order has been recorded in Valmet’s second-quarter 2026 order intake.
The project highlights growing momentum behind carbon capture technologies in the Nordic renewable energy sector, as operators increasingly seek to transform unavoidable biogenic CO₂ emissions into commercially valuable products that support industrial decarbonisation and the circular economy.
