University of Illinois and GenH2 partner to advance liquid hydrogen aviation research

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and GenH2 Corp. have announced a collaboration to accelerate research into liquid hydrogen (LH₂) technologies for next-generation zero-emission aviation.

Under the agreement, GenH2 will provide the university with a laboratory-scale hydrogen liquefier, enabling researchers to produce liquid hydrogen on-site for aerospace testing. The capability is expected to improve access to cryogenic hydrogen research and support the development of hydrogen-powered aircraft systems.

The partnership will combine the University of Illinois’ aerospace research expertise with GenH2’s experience in hydrogen liquefaction, cryogenic technologies and liquid hydrogen infrastructure. Researchers will use the facility to study hydrogen fuel systems, storage, transfer and refueling technologies under real operating conditions.

The new capability will support testing of critical aviation components, including pumps, valves, seals, insulation systems and materials exposed to liquid hydrogen environments. Research activities will focus on improving system reliability, safety, energy efficiency and regulatory readiness for future hydrogen aircraft deployment.

Phillip J. Ansell, director of the Center for Sustainable Aviation at the University of Illinois, said reliable access to liquid hydrogen will expand research capabilities and accelerate evaluation of advanced cryogenic fuel technologies. GenH2 said the collaboration will help generate performance and safety data needed to advance commercialization of hydrogen aviation solutions.

The partnership is expected to support future innovations including advanced cryogenic fuel systems, long-endurance hydrogen aircraft platforms and improved insulation technologies while training engineers for the emerging hydrogen aviation sector.
