Toyota Mobility Foundation Launches European Hydrogen Regions Initiative
The Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF) has launched the European Hydrogen Regions Initiative, opening a call for European regions to participate in a programme aimed at accelerating the development of integrated hydrogen ecosystems across the continent.
Announced in Berlin on 22 June 2026, the initiative is designed to support regions that are already developing hydrogen-based energy systems but face barriers to scaling them into fully sustainable and self-sufficient models. TMF said the programme will focus on practical, real-world solutions that can deliver climate, economic and societal benefits while contributing to Europe’s wider energy transition.
The initiative will identify and support up to five European regions with strong potential to develop connected hydrogen value chains spanning production, distribution and mobility applications. Selected regions will receive structured assessment, technical support and guidance to help build integrated hydrogen infrastructure that can operate without long-term external assistance.
TMF said priority will be given to projects that demonstrate clear local impact and strong potential for replication in other regions, with the aim of creating scalable models for hydrogen deployment across Europe. The foundation emphasised that the programme is intended to strengthen existing regional efforts rather than replace them.
As part of the initiative, TMF has appointed Spilett GmbH to support implementation and regional engagement. The consultancy will assist in identifying and evaluating candidate regions, ensuring a transparent selection process, and contributing to the design of integrated hydrogen ecosystems. It will also help facilitate engagement between regional authorities, industry stakeholders, mobility operators and academic institutions.
Spilett GmbH’s involvement builds on its previous collaboration with TMF in hydrogen ecosystem planning, including the use of digital tools such as H2Scout to support data-driven optimisation of hydrogen value chains.
The European Hydrogen Regions Initiative is open to regions, cities and stakeholders across Europe, with applications now live and set to close on 31 July 2026. Interested participants are invited to submit expressions of interest via the programme’s official platform.
TMF said the initiative reflects its broader commitment to developing scalable mobility and energy solutions that support a low-carbon and inclusive energy transition, with hydrogen expected to play a central role in enabling regional energy resilience and long-term sustainability.
