TGA backs launch of hydrogen autonomous heavy-duty truck in Saudi Arabia
Riyadh has marked a major step towards next-generation freight transport with the launch of the first hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck equipped with autonomous driving technologies, an initiative supported by the Transport General Authority in cooperation with national ministries and private sector partners.
The Transport General Authority (TGA), working alongside the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services, sponsored the launch as part of broader efforts to accelerate the adoption of clean energy and advanced mobility solutions within the logistics sector. The project was delivered through a partnership involving Ismail Abudawood, Procter & Gamble Limited and Hyperview, reflecting a blend of industrial, technology and logistics expertise.
The hydrogen-powered truck is designed to operate with zero carbon emissions, using clean hydrogen fuel that can be refuelled within minutes. It offers a driving range of up to 1,500 kilometres, positioning it as a viable option for long-haul and heavy-duty freight operations that typically demand high efficiency and extended operational capacity.
In addition to its clean energy capabilities, the vehicle integrates multiple levels of autonomous driving technology supported by advanced digital systems. These systems enable continuous software updates and rely on artificial intelligence to enhance operational performance, improve route management and support safer driving conditions across complex transport environments.
Officials involved in the initiative said the project represents a broader shift towards modernising logistics infrastructure and improving supply chain efficiency while reducing environmental impact. The combination of hydrogen propulsion and autonomous functionality is intended to support both sustainability goals and operational productivity across the transport sector.
The initiative was supported by the Transport General Authority along with the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Transport and Logistic Services, highlighting coordinated national efforts to advance clean transport technologies.
Positioned as a milestone in heavy transport innovation, the project underscores Saudi Arabia’s growing focus on integrating hydrogen energy and autonomous systems into commercial logistics, signalling a longer-term transition towards more efficient and lower-emission freight networks.
