Plug Power Brings Danish Green Hydrogen Project Online with 5MW Electrolyser Deployment

Plug Power has completed the commissioning of a 5MW electrolyser system at European Energy’s Måde Power-to-X (PtX) facility in Denmark, marking another milestone in Europe’s expanding green hydrogen infrastructure and demonstrating the growing commercial maturity of hydrogen production projects across the region.

The project, located in Esbjerg and developed by European Energy, has successfully completed installation, commissioning, site acceptance testing and final handover of Plug Power’s GenEco proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser system. The facility is now operational and producing green hydrogen using renewable electricity.

Power-to-X technology uses renewable energy to generate hydrogen and other low-carbon fuels, providing a pathway to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors including industry, transport and energy-intensive manufacturing. The Måde facility is among Denmark’s earliest operational commercial-scale PtX projects and is expected to play a key role in supporting the country’s clean energy ambitions.

At full capacity, the plant is expected to produce approximately 550 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, equivalent to around 1,500 truckloads of fuel. The hydrogen output will be certified as Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) framework, helping meet growing demand for verified low-carbon fuels across Europe.

The project highlights the increasing shift from pilot-scale hydrogen developments to fully operational commercial infrastructure as governments and businesses accelerate investment in clean energy solutions. Plug Power said the facility demonstrates its ability to deploy complex hydrogen systems efficiently through a fully containerised design that reduces installation complexity and shortens project delivery times.

José Luis Crespo, Chief Executive Officer of Plug Power, said the company is entering a new phase of operational growth where standardised project delivery and accumulated deployment experience are helping improve performance and reduce implementation timelines.

He noted that each completed project contributes to a growing knowledge base that enables more efficient execution across Plug’s expanding global portfolio of hydrogen installations.

The company currently has more than 70 GenEco electrolyser systems operating across six continents, providing operational data and experience that are being used to refine system design, commissioning processes and long-term performance.

René Alcaraz Frederiksen, Executive Vice President and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy, said the Måde facility demonstrates how Power-to-X projects are moving from concept to commercial reality.

He said the project has successfully progressed through installation and commissioning and is now producing certified renewable hydrogen, helping support the continued development of Europe’s hydrogen economy.

The completion of the Måde project comes as European policymakers continue to strengthen support for hydrogen deployment through regulatory frameworks and industrial decarbonisation initiatives. With demand for renewable hydrogen expected to increase significantly over the coming decade, operational projects such as Måde are becoming increasingly important in building the infrastructure needed to support Europe’s long-term climate and energy security objectives.

As hydrogen production capacity expands across the continent, the successful commissioning of facilities such as Måde highlights the growing role of Power-to-X technologies in transforming renewable electricity into clean fuels capable of supporting a low-carbon industrial future.
