OMV Petrom completes delivery of Romania’s largest green hydrogen electrolyser at Petrobrazi refinery
OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in South-Eastern Europe, has announced the delivery of the fourth and final module of a 20 MW electrolyser at its Petrobrazi refinery, completing equipment delivery for what the company describes as one of Romania’s largest green hydrogen production facilities. The electrolyser, supplied by Germany’s Neuman & Esser, will produce approximately 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year through water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. Construction, logistics and module assembly at the site are being carried out by Kraftanlagen Romania in partnership with local suppliers.
The 20 MW unit forms part of a wider 55 MW green hydrogen build-out at Petrobrazi, with a second, 35 MW electrolyser project already under development. Combined, the two facilities are expected to produce around 8,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, which will feed a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil unit under construction at the refinery. That SAF/HVO facility carries a total investment of €750 million, including €190 million allocated to the two hydrogen production plants, of which the 20 MW project has received around €21 million in non-reimbursable funding through Romania’s national recovery and resilience plan (PNRR). Once operational, the SAF/HVO unit will have an annual capacity of 250,000 tonnes, positioning OMV Petrom among the largest sustainable fuels producers in South-Eastern Europe.
Radu Căprău, member of OMV Petrom’s executive board for refining and marketing, said the company was “making progress on developing one of the largest green hydrogen production capacities in Romania,” adding that deliveries for the second, 35 MW project would continue in the coming months.
