Karbon-X Secures Landmark Senegal Blue Carbon Project Registration Under Verra VM0033 Methodology

Karbon-X Corp has announced a major milestone in its climate portfolio with the registration of its Senegal Blue Carbon Mangrove Project under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard and Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards, becoming only the second project globally to be registered under the VM0033 methodology for tidal wetland and seagrass restoration.
The project, developed by Karbon-X Corp, spans approximately 7,500 hectares across Senegal’s Sine Saloum Delta and Casamance Estuary regions. It focuses on the restoration of degraded mangrove ecosystems through reforestation and long-term ecosystem recovery, with mangroves widely recognised as among the most carbon-dense natural systems on Earth due to their ability to store significant amounts of carbon while also strengthening coastal resilience and biodiversity.
According to the company, the initiative is expected to deliver an estimated long-term emissions reduction of around 2.2 million tonnes of CO₂e over a 40-year crediting period running through 2062. This positions the project as a significant long-term asset within Karbon-X’s broader development portfolio and reflects its strategy of expanding into large-scale nature-based carbon solutions within emerging market segments.
Registration under Verra’s standards follows a multi-year process involving technical assessments, environmental studies, stakeholder engagement and independent validation. The company said the milestone establishes the formal foundation for ongoing monitoring, verification and implementation under internationally recognised carbon market frameworks.
Karbon-X chief executive Chad Clovis said the registration represents a significant achievement for the company and highlights its ability to develop complex environmental assets at scale. He noted that the VM0033 methodology is one of the most rigorous frameworks in the sector, and that achieving early registration under it underscores the technical and operational demands of such projects.
Blue carbon initiatives, which focus on coastal and marine ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses and salt marshes, have attracted increasing attention in voluntary carbon markets due to their dual climate and biodiversity benefits, alongside their importance for coastal communities vulnerable to climate impacts.
With registration now complete, the Senegal project will move into its next phase of long-term implementation, monitoring and verification in line with Verra requirements, as Karbon-X continues to position itself within the expanding global market for nature-based climate solutions.
