ExxonMobil develops Gulf Coast “carbon superhighway” to connect CO₂ capture, storage and utilization

ExxonMobil is developing an integrated CO₂ transportation network along the U.S. Gulf Coast designed to connect multiple industrial emitters with multiple storage sites and carbon utilization customers.
The company said its “carbon superhighway” approach is intended to address limitations of traditional point-to-point carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems, which typically connect a single capture facility with a single destination.
The proposed network would allow captured CO₂ to be routed between different endpoints, including permanent storage through Class VI wells, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), and industrial utilization.
ExxonMobil said the network would incorporate continuous measurement, monitoring and verification of CO₂ flows, while providing greater flexibility as additional capture projects, storage facilities and pipeline connections are developed.
The company said the integrated model is designed to expand over time without requiring the entire transportation system to be rebuilt, creating a scalable infrastructure platform for growing volumes of captured carbon along the Gulf Coast.
